In India, rice is a widely produced agricultural crop, which contributes 40 per cent of its part to the total food crop production. And, the top largest rice production states of India are West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab etc.

Presently, as per the records, the mainly top basmati rice exporters and rice suppliers are from these regions. Only, these states hold almost 72% of the area of rice growing in India.

According to the latest records, there is a one per cent decrease in total rice production in the previous year due to the pandemic situation. But, the total estimated figure is higher than that and the average of the last five years.

Basmati rice is the topmost produced crop among all other varieties of rice. It is highly in demand by the countries to whom the Indian rice exporters deal largely. It has a record of estimated exports of over 8 million tonnes per year.

Top 10 states having largest rice production:

  1. West Bengal — It is the topmost state of Basmati rice production along with other varieties, and the largest consumer of rice. West Bengal provides 50% part of the total land for cultivation. It has a record of over 146.05 lakhs tonne per year.
  2. Uttar Pradesh — This state is another most cultivated state for basmati rice. This production covers almost 59 lakh hectares of total land. Uttar Pradesh contributes 2300kg of rice per hectare.
  3. Andhra Pradesh — It has a record of 128.95 lakh tonnes of rice production per year. Andhra Pradesh is considered to be the most successful state in producing rice.
  4. Punjab — The most essential state in producing crops. Dedication towards the food crop of Punjab can be determined by the area (28 lakh hectares) which they devoted to production. The record says it produces 105.42 lakh tonnes per year.
  5. Tamilnadu — This state contributes almost 7 per cent of the total land to rice production. On estimated records, it cultivates 3900 kg per hectare and has an average record of 75.86 tonnes per year.
  6. Bihar — Bihar is also famous amongst all other states, the land here is very fertile and the climate is supportive as well. It has a record of 72.68 tonnes per year of rice production.
  7. Chhattisgarh — The contribution of this state is about 5 per cent in the land for Basmati rice production and other variants of rice. Additionally, Chhattisgarh is increasing the area for production as per the passing year. The record says it has a production of 64.28 tonnes per year.
  8. Odisha — Rice is an essential and important meal for southern states. Hence, they have contributed 65 per cent of the total land for food crops and it completed the record of 60.48 lakh tonnes per year.
  9. Assam — Here, people see rice cultivation as their primary work and source for their income along with their food production. They pay the utmost attention to rice crop production. Assam made a record of 48.18 lakh tonnes per year in the cultivation of rice.
  10. Karnataka — This state is more popular for its IT hub, it has 3 per cent land for rice production. It somehow managed to play its part by producing 41.68 lakh tonnes per year.

Conclusion:

The above-listed records say, West Bengal is the largest rice producing state in India which covers almost half of the land for the cultivation of Indian Basmati rice. Along with other states’ productions, India continues to remain the world’s largest basmati rice exporter.
